Which cookies we use and for what purpose
OceanHero GmbH ("OceanHero", "we", "us") uses cookies and similar technologies on oceanhero.today. This page explains what cookies are, why we use them, and how you can control them.
Cookies are small text files stored on your device when you visit a website. They help websites remember information about your visit — like your preferences or whether you've given consent — so things work smoothly the next time you come back.
Cookies set by OceanHero are called "first-party cookies." Cookies set by our partners (such as Microsoft or Google) are called "third-party cookies" and enable functionality like advertising and analytics.
We use cookies in three categories:
Strictly necessary cookies (no consent required) These are essential for the website to function. They handle things like security, load balancing, and remembering your cookie preferences. You can't opt out of these — without them, the site simply wouldn't work. These cookies are session-based or expire within 12 months.
Analytics cookies (consent required) With your consent, we use Microsoft Clarity to understand how people use OceanHero — which helps us improve the experience for everyone. These cookies collect anonymized data about browsing behavior and are never used to identify you personally. Analytics cookies typically expire within 12 months.
Advertising cookies (consent required) We generate revenue through search advertising, and this is what funds our ocean cleanup work. With your consent, our partners — Microsoft (Bing Ads) and Google (AdSense for Search) — may use cookies to show you relevant ads based on your search queries and interests. Without consent, you'll still see ads, but they'll be contextual rather than personalized. We use Google Consent Mode v2 to ensure ad behavior automatically adapts based on your consent choices. Advertising cookies may persist for up to 13 months, depending on the partner.
Besides OceanHero itself, the following third-party partners may set cookies on our site:
- Microsoft Corporation — search results and advertising. Microsoft Privacy Statement
- Google LLC — advertising (AdSense for Search). Google Privacy Policy
We have Data Processing Agreements (DPAs) in place with all partners, including Standard Contractual Clauses (SCCs) where data is transferred outside the European Economic Area.
When you first visit OceanHero, you'll see a consent banner powered by our Google-certified Consent Management Platform (CMP), which operates under the IAB Transparency & Consent Framework (TCF) v2.3. You can choose which cookie categories to accept or reject. Essential cookies cannot be rejected as they are strictly necessary to provide you with our services.
You can change your preferences at any time by clicking the cookie settings link in the footer of any page. Withdrawing consent is as easy as giving it.
You can also manage or delete cookies directly through your browser settings. Note that blocking certain cookies may affect how some parts of the site work. Most browsers let you:
- See which cookies are stored
- Delete cookies individually or all at once
- Block third-party cookies
- Set up notifications when cookies are placed

We may use web beacons (small image pixels) in addition to cookies. These work alongside cookies to help us understand traffic patterns and measure the effectiveness of our service. The same consent rules apply — we will not deploy these technologies for analytics or advertising purposes without your consent where required.
We do not use Flash cookies or Local Shared Objects.
European Economic Area, UK, and Switzerland: Under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the ePrivacy Directive, we obtain your consent before setting any non-essential cookies. You have the right to withdraw consent at any time. Our certified CMP ensures compliance with Google's EU User Consent Policy for users in these regions.
California, USA: Under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) as amended by the CPRA, you have the right to opt out of the sale or sharing of your personal information. OceanHero does not sell personal information. You may still opt out of interest-based advertising through the links provided above or by using the Global Privacy Control (GPC) signal in your browser.
Other jurisdictions: We respect applicable local privacy laws. If you are located in a jurisdiction with specific cookie consent requirements, our consent banner will adapt accordingly.
Cookies are just one part of how we handle data. For the full picture — including your rights under GDPR and CCPA, what data we collect, how long we keep it, and how to contact our data protection team — please read our Privacy Policy.
We may update this Cookie Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices, technology, or legal requirements. The date at the top always reflects when it was last revised. Material changes will be communicated via a notification banner on our website.
